Rails-to-Trails Conservancy created Celebrate Trails Day in 2013. Held annually on the fourth Saturday of April, the day celebrates the nation’s trails and promotes wellness, an appreciation of the outdoors, and active transportation. This year Celebrate Trails Day is Saturday, April 27.
DVRPC assists municipalities, counties, and others throughout the region in the planning, design, and construction of trails for all to enjoy through our Regional Trail Program’s investment in the Circuit Trails–Greater Philadelphia's 800-plus-mile network of multi-use trails. The Circuit Trails network not only provides access to the region's rivers, creeks, and streams, but it also allows safer and more efficient travel by bicycle or foot between homes, businesses, parks, schools, and community centers, all free from motorized traffic. A new round of funding through the Regional Trails Program is currently available. With the generous support of the William Penn Foundation, up to $2 million is available to acquire right-of-way, plan, design, or construct Circuit Trails, trailheads, gateways, and neighborhood connections.
This year DVRPC is also celebrating a major win for the Circuit Trails network. In March, Delaware County was awarded a $2.5 million grant through the Neighborhood Access and Equity Program to support planning for safety improvements to Pennsylvania Route 291 in the City of Chester. A key aspect of the improvements will be the implementation of a segment of the East Coast Greenway as an off-road trail within the city running along Route 291. The East Coast Greenway is a walking and biking route that stretches 3,000 miles from Maine to Florida and offers a safe place for bicyclists and pedestrians of all ages and abilities to commute, exercise, and visit new destinations.
