Held annually on the fourth Saturday of April, the day celebrates the nation’s trails and promotes wellness, an appreciation of the outdoors, and active transportation.

Rails-to-Trails Conservancy created Celebrate Trails Day in 2013. Held annually on the fourth Saturday of April, the day celebrates the nation’s trails and promotes wellness, an appreciation of the outdoors, and active transportation. This year Celebrate Trails Day is Saturday, April 26.

DVRPC assists municipalities, counties, and others throughout the region in the planning, design, and construction of trails for all to enjoy through our Regional Trail Program’s investment in the Circuit Trails–Greater Philadelphia's 800-plus-mile network of multi-use trails. The Circuit Trails network not only provides access to the region's rivers, creeks, and streams, but it also allows safer and more efficient travel by bicycle or foot between homes, businesses, parks, schools, and community centers, all free from motorized traffic. In July 2024, the DVRPC Board approved $2 million in grants for 12 trail projects through the Regional Trails Program. These projects will continue to expand the Circuit Trails network and build community connections to it.

Additionally, the DVRPC Board approved $120 million in the regional Transportation Improvement Program to enhance the Circuit Trails, marking the largest single investment in the network to date. This funding will support significant projects across the region, including the Spring Garden Connector in Philadelphia and the PA 291 Complete Streets project in Delaware County, both aimed at creating a safe and efficient network for all users. In recognition of these efforts, the Pennsylvania Environmental Council honored DVRPC with the Trailblazer Award for leadership in securing federal funding for critical Circuit Trails projects. The DVRPC Board members from the southeastern PA counties were instrumental in making this investment happen, as were the local stakeholders who work hard to ready individual trails projects for investment.
