This new study from DVRPC examines transportation issues and suggests possible improvements to connectivity, safety, and accessibility in three Burlington County municipalities: Maple Shade, Mansfield, and Evesham.

Downtown areas in Burlington County are growing, but a lack of bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure connecting them to surrounding neighborhoods limits access for those not in a vehicle. The Burlington County Downtown Access Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan, a new study by DVRPC, examines transportation issues and suggests possible improvements to connectivity, safety, and accessibility in three municipalities: Maple Shade, Mansfield, and Evesham. The project team engaged in public outreach efforts, fieldwork, and GIS analysis to understand existing conditions in each municipality and residents’ experiences and concerns with walking and biking in the area.

The report includes specific recommendations for each municipality based on its own existing conditions and community input. It also identifies common challenges shared by community members across the municipalities, such as arterial roadways dividing residential zones, aging sidewalks, and limited bike infrastructure. The report also lays out common strategies endorsed by the communities for greater connectivity to downtown areas and trail networks and for safety improvements, such as separation from vehicles, safer crossings, and traffic calming measures. The report concludes with guidance to the County and municipalities for the effective implementation of these recommendations, laying out steps to make Burlington County more bicycle- and pedestrian-friendly.
