Smart Growth Intern

Job Description 

DVRPC's Office of Smart Growth is seeking an intern for the fall of 2024 to support FY25 projects related to housing and transit-oriented development and parking. We are flexible in terms of work arrangements and would expect one to two days of availability each week. The ideal candidate will demonstrate interest in housing, real estate development, and land use planning and familiarity with smart growth planning principles. We expect that this intern will contribute to important planning efforts, including: 

  • The NJ State Zoning Atlas aims to collect and analyze data to assist our municipal planning partners in visualizing land use policies. This data will support their efforts in housing reform, specifically promoting affordable and workforce housing in the region. 
  • Transit-Oriented Communities (TOC): support SEPTA’s ongoing work to improve access to and explore development opportunities at transit stations throughout southeastern Pennsylvania. 
  • Parking Reform: research and analysis on best practices in parking management and the reform of minimum parking requirements. 
  • Other projects based on workload, interests, and skills. 

Candidates with strong written, verbal, and graphic communication skills are encouraged to apply. Individuals proficient in the use of GIS and the Adobe Creative Suite to conduct spatial analysis and create maps are particularly attractive to the department. 

Responsibilities 

  • Assist professional staff with research, data collection, and data analysis. 
  • Generate text, tables, and graphics to be used in digital products, presentations, planning reports and memos. 
  • Conduct field work with other team members. 

Qualifications 

  • Knowledge of and experience with general regional planning, economic development, and smart growth principles. Based on the anticipated work, prior experience and/or interest in housing, zoning and/or real estate development is preferred. 
  • Excellent writing and communications skills. 
  • Ability to prioritize and multitask. 
  • Ability to work independently and in teams. 
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite, GIS, and Adobe Creative Suite preferred. 
  • Basic knowledge of the Philadelphia region is desirable. 

Availability 

Ability to start on September 3, 2024 is preferred. This position requires a commitment of up to 15 hours per week.

Compensation 

$17 per hour for interns currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree. $20 per hour for candidates currently pursuing a Master’s degree. Students with Work-Study funding are encouraged to apply.

Minimum Education and Training 

Must have completed at least ONE YEAR of a college/university program or be enrolled in a master's program, or an equivalent combination of experience and training, plus substantial experience, interest, or involvement in transportation engineering or planning.
