Freight Planning Intern

Job Description

The Office of Freight and Clean Transportation (FACT) is seeking a qualified student with an urban planning background, an intermediate level of mastery of ArcGIS software, and a strong interest in freight and clean transportation. This is an opportunity to work independently and collaboratively on projects including white papers, the Regional Truck Parking Study, as well as other regional freight data analysis.

Primary assignments will include composing one or more white papers by compiling background research and case study analysis on modern, context-sensitive warehouse site-designs and adaptive re-use of outmoded facilities. As e-commerce evolves and space requirements shift, it is imperative for planners to understand how vacant or underperforming warehouses can be repurposed for new uses, such as sports facilities, mixed-use developments, or even housing, leveraging their large footprints and strategic locations. In addition, as EV adoption expands and accelerates, innovation in how new warehouse sites are designed to accommodate the greener, more sustainable modes of transportation will be key. Research, data analysis, and writing conducted over the intern’s tenure will contribute directly to the upcoming regional freight plan. This work will be performed under close supervision and in the context of the broader project portfolio.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct research on existing conditions, current trends, and produce case studies.
  • Develop maps, graphics, and illustrations for presentations and reports.
  • Prepare written content of research for use at meetings and in reports.
  • Support meetings and field visits by taking notes and documenting findings.
  • Collect, process, and analyze data as necessary.

Qualifications

  • Proficient computer skills in areas such as ArcGIS software, Adobe Design software, data analysis, and word processing software.
  • Strong interest in urban planning and policies with an emphasis on land use, economic development, and industrial and freight planning.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Strong writing and analytical skills.
  • Experience with case study analysis, literature review, and other research methods is a plus.

Availability

This is a hybrid position which requires a commitment of up to 15 hours per week.

Compensation

Interns currently pursuing or holding a Bachelor’s degree will be compensated at a rate of $17 per hour. Those pursuing or holding a Master’s degree will receive $20 per hour. We encourage students with Work-Study funding to apply.

Minimum Education and Training

Must have completed at least ONE YEAR of a college/university program or be enrolled in a master's program, or an equivalent combination of experience and training, plus substantial experience, interest, or involvement in urban land use and transportation planning.
