The Game of Floods

This Climate Adaptation Forum took place on March 2, 2018, where we were led in The Game of Floods by Kristin Baja (bio below). The Game of Floods an interactive game-based exercise that helps participants understand the process of conducting a vulnerability and risk assessment and think about balancing costs, priorities, and interests in identifying strategies to protect public assets from current and future flooding.

Participants from throughout the region, representing local and state governments, businesses, colleges and universities, non-profits, and other organizations were divided into 8 teams of 8 or 9. Each player chose a pseudonym, and was assigned one of nine roles (Deputy Mayor, Transportation Planner, Water/Wastewater Enterprise General Manager, Power Plant Enterprise General Manager, City Planner and Sustainability Director, Director of Public Works, Home Owners Association President, Community Advocate, Mangrove Association President).

The game was then played in a series of carefully steps, integrated into a presentation introducing climate science, asset inventory, vulnerability, risk, and adaptation planning.
