Job Description
DVRPC is looking for a summer intern to assist with regional traffic congestion management. This internship involves transportation planning work with the Regional Congestion Management Process (including cutting edge analysis of archived operations data). Work will be conducted both independently on discrete projects and with a team on broader efforts.
The intern’s work will use archived travel time data to perform before-and-after performance evaluations using travel times and other congestion measures to determine the effectiveness of recently completed transportation improvement projects on mobility, reliability, and safety. This position will also help review, document, and learn about the state-of-the-practice in congestion management across peer metropolitan planning organizations (MPO) from across the nation.
Responsibilities
- Use archived travel time data to perform before-and-after performance evaluations using travel times and other congestion measures to determine the effectiveness of implemented improvements on mobility and reliability.
- Use archived origin and destination trip data to better visualize driver routes and understand travel patterns to inform developing strategies for managing congestion.
- Assist with updating federal congestion mitigation and air quality transportation performance measures and targets.
- Capture and analyze incident data on the roadways throughout the region that contribute to nonrecurring congestion (e.g. crashes, disabled vehicles).
- Assist in preparing maps, charts and other visual displays of CMP information.
- Assist with research in the state-of-the-practice research in regional congestion management processes.
Qualifications
- Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, G Suite, and ArcGIS software.
- Experience with computer programming a plus.
- Good communication skills and ability to assimilate complex technical information and present it clearly.
- Ability to establish effective relations with associates and with representatives of public and private organizations.
- Knowledge of and interest in transportation and land use planning principles and issues.
Availability
This is a hybrid position which requires a commitment of up to 37.5 hours per week.
Compensation
Salary is commensurate with education and experience. Students with Work-Study funding are encouraged to apply.
Minimum Education and Training
Must have completed at least THREE YEARS of a college/university program or be enrolled in a master's program (preferred), or an equivalent combination of experience and training, plus substantial experience, interest, or involvement in transportation engineering and planning.
